We haven’t had much time to explore when we’ve been in Tamarindo. Here are a few things we’ve done and others that sound fun and have good reviews. As time goes by, we’ll add more.

Tamarindo Estuary Boat Tours

There is a freshwater estuary on the north end of the beach that separates Tamarindo from Playa Grande. You can take a boat (panga) deep into the estuary to see crocodiles, birds, and other wildlife. Then you can walk into the jungle where the Howler monkeys hang out (hundreds of them sometimes). It’s fun to hear them howling at you. And the price is $25 (or less if you negotiate). We did this and really enjoyed the trip.

Here are some photos from our tour along the estuary.

We went with our friends Ron and Mary Beth in January 2018 and really enjoyed the trip. It was windy so we went to a cove that was protected from the wind to snorkel. The food was very good and there was plenty of it. The service was great and there was plenty of beer and rum drinks to go around.

Ostional Wildlife Refuge, Guanacaste

Susan and I went with Murray Greer, our realtor and Ivan Silva, our favorite taxi driver to Ostional to see the Olive Ridley sea turtles one night in September. It’s about an hour and a half from Casa Tranquilo over both paved and dirt roads. The night we went the roads were in good shape, but can get rough at times.

We met our guide who is licensed by the government and walked onto the beach. We saw about 30 turtles including one laying eggs.

Always go with a guide and use a flashlight with a red filter.
